My name is Mckenzie Moore. I am from San Francisco, California, born and raised. There are four discourse communities that I belong to. They include basketball, family, student, and church. There are many similarities between each discourse community, but also many differences. Each of these communities includes goals, conventions, modes of communication, and specialized language.
Basketball is a very big part of my life, whether I have a long career or not I want basketball to be in my life always. I currently am playing basketball for UTEP. We have very high expectations this year as a team and a program. We will achieve our goals by working hard on and off the court. Not only being good basketball players but being good people. Preparation in basketball is very big
for understanding what teams and player’s strengths and weaknesses are. Also, practicing good habits such as being on time to practice, class, and meetings along with working on your game by yourself doing and finishing your homework, on time are all conventions of being an athlete. We communicate by face to face interactions during and after practice, and off the court by text and phone. There is specialized language in basketball such as, double dribble, traveling, four point play, etc.
Another discourse community I belong to is my family. My family is also another big part of my life. My goal is to take care of my family and make sure everyone is okay with less worries. I am one of the first to go to college in my family, and I just want to keep on the path of excellence so that my little nieces have a positive role model. My mother instilled good values into me and I hope to continuing living
up to those standards. It is important in family’s to be there for one another and help each other with whatever is going on in their life. Communication is another important factor with family life. The most important convention of a family to me is to love one another no matter what. The methods of communication for me and my family is text and phone since I live in another state, which is how we keep in contact. My family uses nicknames that are specific to my family, such nicknames include mother and sis.
The third discourse community I belong to is being a student. My goals are not different than most because I want to get good grades, learn as much as possible and graduate with a degree. Conventions in being a student for me are to work hard, study and being responsible by turning in my work on time. By applying these conventions reaching my goals is possible. There are many ways in which I communicate with other
students and my professors. Such methods include blackboard, lectures, and email. I find this discourse community to be the most demanding.
Faith is a very important aspect of my life, so my finally discourse community is the church. My goal is to have a better relationship with GOD. I can achieve my goal by attending church, being a good person and praying on a regular basis. When I attend church I speak with people with similar beliefs and use the bible as a guide for my life. There are certain phrases that are said in church specific to this discourse community such as GOD bless you and GOD be with you.
The four discourse communities I belong to are: Basketball, family, student and church. Although I belong to many more discourse communities these four are big parts of my life and always will be. While certain aspects of each community may change over time my association with each community will not change.
